Three Documented Air Filters for Spray Painting
These three products address different point-of-use needs. Select one only after identifying whether the problem is liquid water, condensed moisture, oil aerosol, particles, or water vapor. A general water-removal statement does not prove a pressure-dew-point result.
| Product | Pricing | Best for | Rating | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 01DeVilbiss CamAir QC3 Filter and Dryer (130525) | — | Intermittent, low-volume painting where point-of-use humidity removal is necessary. | — | Price |
| 02Motor Guard M-60 Air Filter | — | Point-of-use particle, condensed-moisture, and oil-aerosol control on a 1/2-inch NPT line. | — | Price |
| 03Sharpe 606A Air Control Unit (U06720) | — | General shop-air filtration and pressure control where a 5-micron filter is sufficient. | — | Price |
1. DeVilbiss QC3 — documented humidity removal#
The manufacturer documentation describes a point-of-use filter and dryer with a replaceable desiccant cartridge. It states 0.1-micron filtration and a 16 cfm operating point at 30 psi with a 2 psi pressure drop. Confirm that this documented flow is sufficient for the connected spray equipment.
The cartridge uses condition-based indication. Follow the current instructions for draining, inspection, and replacement. Do not infer a universal service interval.
2. Motor Guard M-60 — high-flow fine filtration#
Motor Guard documents 100 cfm nominal airflow, a 125 psi maximum pressure, and nominal 0.01-micron filtration. Its stated contaminant scope includes particles, condensed moisture, and oil aerosols. The documentation does not establish water-vapor drying or a pressure dew point.
The base unit has no integrated regulator or gauge. Include separate pressure control when the application requires it, and use the identified replacement element.
3. Sharpe 606A — integrated filter and regulator#
Sharpe documents a 5-micron filter, a 120 cfm filter capacity, and a 50 cfm regulator capacity. Size equipment on the capacity of the path actually used. The product page and manual publish different pressure limits, so use the lower documented limit unless the manufacturer and unit nameplate confirm otherwise.
The cited evidence does not identify a desiccant or membrane stage. Do not treat this unit as a water-vapor dryer.
Buying framework#
- Record the spray gun’s airflow and required dynamic pressure.
- Identify each contaminant and its phase.
- Confirm upstream bulk-liquid removal and working drains.
- Check the product’s corrected flow, pressure limit, ports, and pressure drop.
- Plan element, cartridge, bowl, and drain service.
Heads up
Paint-air treatment is not breathing-air approval. Do not connect a supplied-air respirator unless the complete source, treatment, monitoring, and operating procedure meet all applicable instructions and requirements.
Verdict#
Use the DeVilbiss unit when its documented flow is sufficient and desiccant-based humidity removal is required. Use the Motor Guard unit for its documented high-flow filtration scope. Use the Sharpe unit when an integrated 5-micron filter and regulator match the application. None is a universal substitute for correct upstream cooling, drainage, or system-level drying.

Q & A
Frequently asked questions
- Which product has documented humidity removal?
- The DeVilbiss QC3 documentation identifies a desiccant cartridge and humidity removal. The cited documents for the other two products do not establish water-vapor drying.
- Does a paint-air filter make compressed air suitable for breathing?
- No. Use only a complete breathing-air system that meets the respirator manufacturer’s instructions and applicable safety requirements.
