How to Verify a Refrigerated Air Dryer Before Purchase

Do not select a refrigerated dryer from its model name or nominal flow alone. Verify corrected capacity and every operating limit against the proposed installation.

Information to collect first#

• Maximum coincident airflow
• Worst inlet and ambient temperatures
• Minimum operating pressure
• Required pressure dew point
• Electrical, drain, ventilation, and service needs

Record one design condition for each item. Use the worst conditions that can occur together. Do not combine unrelated extremes, and do not substitute compressor horsepower, pipe size, or a marketing label for measured or documented flow.

A five-step selection process#

1. Confirm maximum coincident airflow.
2. Confirm worst inlet and ambient temperatures.
3. Confirm minimum operating pressure.
4. Confirm required pressure dew point.
5. Confirm electrical, drain, ventilation, and service needs.

Ask the supplier to identify the source and revision date for each value. The quote must state any correction factors, excluded conditions, required upstream treatment, and optional equipment needed to meet the stated result.

Compare complete installed requirements#

Compare each acceptable proposal on the same basis:

Do not score a proposal that fails a required limit. A feature cannot compensate for an unsafe pressure or temperature rating, insufficient corrected capacity, incompatible materials, or a missing performance definition.

Questions for the supplier#

• Which exact model and configuration meets the stated design condition?
• What rating conditions and correction method support that selection?
• Which claims apply to the complete supplied configuration rather than an optional stage?
• What must be installed upstream and downstream?
• What routine service is required, and which parts must be stocked?
• Which alarms or inspections show loss of performance?
• What are the written warranty exclusions and commissioning requirements?

Keep the supplier’s response with the equipment record. Recheck the selection when production demand, compressor controls, lubricant, piping, ambient conditions, or the required air quality changes.

Installation and maintenance gate#

Before purchase, confirm that the site can provide safe isolation, pressure relief where required, drainage, electrical service, ventilation, freeze protection, and access for inspection. The current manufacturer manual and the equipment nameplate must control the final installation.

After commissioning, record the baseline pressure, temperature, flow, and any available differential-pressure or dew-point indication. A baseline makes later troubleshooting more useful than replacing parts from a calendar alone.

Decision#

Proceed only when one documented configuration meets every required condition and the site can maintain it. If corrected capacity, compatibility, performance, or an operating limit remains unclear, pause the purchase and request written clarification. A substantive specification is safer and more useful than an unsupported ranked list.
